Louisa Adams First Spouse Gold Coin
The 2008 Louisa Adams Gold Coin was the sixth issue of the First Spouse Gold Coin Program, which provided for the issuance of one-half ounce 24 karat gold coins for the First Ladies.The obverse of the coin, designed by Susan Gamble and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, features a portrait of the First Lady. The reverse of the coin, designed and sculpted by Joseph Menna, depicts a younger Louisa Adams and her son Charles making a journey across Europe in order to rejoin husband and father in Paris.
Coins were released on May 29, 2008 and limited to a maximum authorized mintage of 40,000. By the end of sales, the US Mint sold a combined 11,677 across uncirculated and proof options.
