James Buchanan's Liberty First Spouse Gold Coin
The 2010 James Buchanan's Liberty Gold Coin features a classic depiction of Liberty since there was no spouse during the 15th Presidency. The design made this a popular issue for collectors seeking to assemble the Liberty Subset consisting of the four coins of the series with Liberty images. The obverse image was original designed by Christian Gobrecht for the Liberty Head Quarter Eagle issued from 1840 to 1907. The reverse of the coin, designed by David Westwood and sculpted by Joseph Menna, features a scene of James Buchanan in his youth. He is working as a bookkeeper at his family's general store.
Sales of the Buchanan's Liberty Gold Coin began at the United Stats Mint on September 2, 2010. The proof version unexpectedly sold out early, followed by another early sell out for the uncirculated version. Last reported sales were 5,348 uncirculated and 7,304 proofs.
