Julia Tyler First Spouse Gold Coin
The 2009 Julia Tyler Gold Coin represents a popular issue of the 24 karat gold series. A combination of factors led to low sales and a correspondingly low mintage. Within the series, the Julia Tyler coin also marked the first time that two spouses were honored for a single president. Julia Tyler became the second wife of President James Tyler while he was in office.
The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Julia Tyler. The reverse of the coin displays a scene of Julia Tyler and her husband dancing at a White House Ball. She is credited with introducing the Polka at a White House event, leading to a national craze. The obverse and reverse were both designed by Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by Don Everhart.
The Julia Tyler First Spouse Gold Coins were released by the United States Mint on August 6, 2009. At the conclusion of sales ten months later, sales of 2,861 uncirculated coins and 4,830 proof coins had been recorded.
