Martin Van Buren's Liberty First Spouse Gold Coin
The 2008 Martin Van Buren's Liberty Gold Coin was the eighth release of the First Spouse Gold Coin Program. Similar to the prior issue, a depiction of Liberty from a circulating coin is used since President Van Buren did not have a spouse while in office.The obverse of the coin, originally designed by Christian Gobrecht, was used on the Liberty Seated Dime which was minted from 1837 to 1891. The reverse of the coin, designed by Thomas Cleveland and sculpted by Jim Licaretz, depicts a young Martin Van Buren reading under a tree.
Coins were released on November 25, 2008 and limited to a maximum authorized mintage of 40,000. At the conclusion of sales, collectors had ordered 11,849 across proof and uncirculated options.
