The 2009 Sarah Polk Gold Coin
marked the fourth release for the year and the twelfth release for the series overall. She served as the First Lady from 1845 to 1849 as the wife of President James K. Polk.The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Sarah Polk with required inscriptions. The reverse features a scene of Sarah Polk serving in her capacity as her husband's private secretary during his presidency. She was the only first spouse to take on this role. The obverse and reverse was designed and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill.
The Sarah Polk First Spouse Gold Coins were released by the United States Mint on September 3, 2009. They were limited to a maximum authorized mintage of 40,000 coins across both proof and uncirculated versions. A combined 8,658 coins were sold.
