23 October 2008 - 19:40Martin Van Buren’s Liberty First Sposue Gold Preview

Martin Van Buren’s Liberty First Spouse GoldAs we approach the end of the year, we also approach the final release of 2008 for the First Spouse Gold Series. The last coin for Martin Van Buren’s Liberty is scheduled to be released on November 25, 2008.

Since President Van Buren did not have a spouse while in office, the coin will bear the Liberty image of a circulating coin from his era. The coin chosen is the Liberty Seated Dime, minted from 1837 to 1891 and originally design by Christian Gobrecht. Prior releases for President’s without spouses have been popular as collectors enjoy revising classic designs on modern gold coins.

The reverse of the coin will feature a younger Martin Van Buren reading a book under a tree. This was designed by Thomas Cleveland and sculpted by Jim Licaretz. Coins will be available in proof or uncirculated versions. The pricing and maximum authorized mintages have not yet been announced.

7 October 2008 - 15:37First Spouse Gold Mintage Update

Louisa Adams CoinWith the First Spouse Gold Coins in full swing with the seventh coin released, now is an interesting time to look at the final mintages and sales figures for each coin in the series so far.

The first three coins of the series honoring Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, and Andrew Jackson’s Liberty had quickly sold out their entire authorized mintage of 40,000 on the first day of sales. After that point, each subsequent release had experienced a decline in sales.

The most recent release for Andrew Jackson’s Liberty seems poised to break this trend. This release has several things going for it. First, Andrew Jackson was one of the relatively better known Presidents. Second, the price of gold has been on the upswing once again. Third, the design reproduces the classic Capped Bust Liberty Half Dollar coin.

Without further ado, here are the mintage and sales figures for all releases of the First Spouse Gold Coin Series so far.

Andrew Jackson’s Liberty First Spouse GoldThe latest coin in the First Spouse Gold Coin series went on sale August 28, 2008 at the US Mint.

The coin is known as Andrew Jackson’s Liberty First Spouse Gold Coin. Since Andrew Jackson did not have a spouse while serving as President, the obverse design of the coin bears an image of a circulating coin from his era.

The obverse design features a reproductoin of the Capped Bust, Lettered Edge Half Dollar. This coin was minted from 1807 to 1836 and originally design by John Reich. The reverse design features Andrew Jackson known as “Old Hickory” on horseback.

Each coin contains one-half ounce of 24 karat gold. Coins will be offered in both proof and uncirculated versions. There is a maximum authorized mintage of 40,000 across both proof and uncirculated coins.

The proof version of the coin is priced at $619.95 and the unicirculated version is priced at $599.95. Even though this represents a significant premium above the precious metal value, it is in line with pricing of other recent releases.
